White Burgundy "Starter Kit"

In the grand tradition of 'starter kit' memes, I've created a "White Burgundy Starter Kit" - an opportunity to explore the different levels of Burgundy - from "Villages" level (good), to 1er Cru (Best).

Just add an elaborate cheeseboard and posh glasses.

GOOD

2 x Pouilly Fuisse, Domaine Christophe Cordier, Les Menetrieres, 2017

STYLE: A smooth, rounded wine with subtle oaky, buttery notes balanced with fresh, elegant notes of almond and white fruits.

Pouilly-Fuisse is an appellation in the Maconnais, one of Burgundy’s more southern regions. The slightly more southern region gives wines with a riper fruit profile than their more expensive Cote D’Or counterparts (think Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet etc). If you’re a fan of white Burgundy the wines of this region can offer incredible value.

SERVE: 12-14 degrees celcius (NB this is quite bit higher than fridge temperature!)

BETTER

2 x Chassagne Montrachet, "Vieilles Vignes", Domaine Guy Amiot et Fils, 2017

STYLE: A beautiful, rich and fleshy wine but well supported by a good acidity. Delicate aromas of white flowers and fruits. Will keep for 10 years, developing complexity and a typical honeyed note.

SERVE: 12-14 degrees celcius (NB this is quite bit higher than fridge temperature !

BEST

2 x Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru, Les Champ Gains, Domaine Guy Amiot Et Fils, 2017

STYLE: Dry, full-bodied, rounded with nutty, citrussy characters.

Les Champs Gain is a Premier Cru climat in the center of the famous Chassagne-Montrachet commune at the southern end of the Cote d'Or. It is planted to both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, making both red and white wines, but it is the elegant, rounded white wines like this with nutty, citrussy characters that attract the most attention from critics and wine lovers alike.

DRINKING WINDOW: now til 2025, ideal around 2022.

SERVE: 12-14 degrees celcius (NB this is quite bit higher than fridge temperature !

Domaine Guy Amiot Et Fils

Guy Amiot is undoubtedly one of the leading winemakers in Chassagne. Its wines perfectly combine traditional vinification with contemporary style and great elegance. For this purpose, only about 25 percent new wood is used in the maturation, so that the typicity of the respective terroir is not masked. Since 1992 Guy Amiot's son Thierry has been involved with the now fourth generation since the founding of the winery at the beginning of the twenties.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER DOMAINE CHRISTOPHE CORDIER

"This is the most exciting domaine in Fuissé (it is based at the top of the hill overlooking the village) and the wines are great value and qualitatively comparable with many in the Côte d'Or."

Growing in and around the Burgundy village of Fuissé, on the finest terroirs the Macon region has to offer, Domaine Cordier's vineyards are cultivated with the greatest respect for the grape and for the Domaine's pursuit of excellence. This is a family domaine, directed by Christophe Cordier, a winemaker determined to enhance the terroirs and coax out their full potential. The domaine produces fine white wines from the Chardonnay grape, often likened to the best Grands Crus.
